Paper Bag Test
In this interactive project, people are invited to write reactions, comments and stories on several paper bags that have been opened flat, coated with colors that reference skin tones, and labeled with words used to describe race. The labels on the bags touch upon a range of experiences, for example: Nude, Bamboo, Brown Sugar, Fair, Redneck, Redskin, Bandaid, Bean, Yellow, White, Ebony, Porcelain, Spice. They are derived from foundation colors, slurs, foods, jokes, and historical contexts.
Historically, the paper bag test was said to have been used within the Black community to separate black people into two categories – those lighter than a paper bag, and those darker. Access to parties and clubs was assigned based on this criteria.
